[1] It’s not the literal meaning. As far as I could get it, the words “waga mama wo shika atta kureru” literally means “my condition was nothing but exist”, while “yasashisa ga ureshikatta” would be “kindness was (making me) happy”.

I think it embodies the idea of someone who didn’t think highly of him/herself, but still found happiness in the other’s treatment. Hence the translation.
